Superintendent Search

The School Town of Munster Board of Trustees hired BWP & Associates to support its work in hiring its next superintendent for the School Town of Munster. Dr. Bret Heller has accepted a new position in Colorado and will conclude his service in Munster on June 30.

The School Board is dedicated to selecting the best leader for the School Town of Munster and aims to have the new superintendent selected by July 1, 2025 (if possible). BWP, a national search firm, worked with the school board four years ago when Dr. Heller was hired.

The Next Leader

The Board of School Trustees seeks a dynamic and inspirational leader who embraces the school district’s strategic plan that focuses on high quality education for every student, welcoming and supportive schools, family and community partnerships, recruiting and retaining top educators, and operational excellence and modernization.  The ideal candidate will have a strong record of accomplishment as a leader, a distinctive background in instruction, outstanding communication skills, a collaborative philosophy, and the ability to involve all stakeholders in process of growth and change. The current superintendent, who led the district with distinction for the past three years, is relocating to Colorado with his family. 

The District

The School Town of Munster is a highly regarded public school district located in Munster, Indiana, recognized at both the state and national levels. Home to National Blue Ribbon award-winning schools, the district serves approximately 4,100 students in grades PK–12 with a student-teacher ratio of 18:1. State assessment data shows that 77% of elementary students are proficient in math and 60% in reading, ranking the School Town of Munster among the top-performing districts in Indiana.

The Community

Munster is a vibrant bedroom community of 23,600 residents, located approximately 30 miles southeast of the Chicago Loop. Known for its excellent schools, parks, restaurants, and local businesses, Munster is consistently ranked as one of the best places to live and raise a family in Indiana. Many families choose to move to Munster for its strong public schools, and in 2023, the community reaffirmed that commitment by passing a school referendum with over 70% support. This overwhelming approval not only reflects the community’s dedication to education but also provides financial stability for the district for years to come. Munster’s location near major metropolitan areas in both Indiana and Illinois offers residents the perfect balance of small-town charm and big-city access.

The process will be conducted as a confidential “rolling” search. This means that applications will be assessed as they are submitted, and screening interviews will be conducted throughout the application period. The application deadline is June 7, with the new superintendent expected to be selected by the end of June.
